About Us

“Art is not a plaything, but a necessity, and its essence, form, is not a decorative adjustment, but a cup into which life can be poured and lifted to the lips and be tasted.”

- Rebecca West (writer, December 21, 1892–March 15, 1983)

Mission/Vision

To inspire lifelong appreciation of the arts for all.

Sonoma Art School is a 501(c)(3) organization in Northern Sonoma County that encourages arts advocacy, fosters creativity, creates diverse connections and collaborations, and champions innovation and equity within the arts to cultivate a dynamic community.

Sonoma Art School Vision Statement

At Sonoma Art School (SAS), we believe in the power of creativity to shape the future. As the world of technology advances, the need for human ingenuity and artistic expression becomes even more essential. As the New Times stated “Our technologies are tools. But our creative works carry the wisdom of the world.” SAS is dedicated to nurturing that wisdom by providing accessible, inclusive art education to students of all ages.

Through our programs, SAS offers not only a place to explore artistic talent but also a springboard into a deeper arts curriculum and understanding of the importance of creativity in the jobs of the future. We help students build strong portfolios as they move through our programs, providing a foundation for future academic and creative pursuits. Whether students seek a career in the arts or simply wish to express themselves, we believe in fostering a lifelong appreciation for creativity.

By offering scholarships, we ensure that financial limitations do not stand in the way of anyone’s opportunity to experience the transformative power of art. At SAS, we are preparing the next generation of creators to thrive in a world that values innovation and artistry.

What We Do

Our goal is to bring hands-on arts experiences in music, dance, visual arts and drama to local northern Sonoma County schools, non-profit organizations, institutions and private groups. We offer classes, workshops, camps and other learning opportunities using the best instructional practices in the field of arts education.

Our Team

Our team includes experienced specialists in the arts and education fields including National Board Certified Teachers and Arts Therapists, professional artists and teaching artists. We work closely with teachers, students, and teaching artists to keep our work refined, relevant, and effective. Our programs include direct instruction as well as teacher training.

“Mia (4th grade) has a passion for art, and I was so lucky to find Kelly and the Sonoma Art School to help her advance her skills. She was exposed to new techniques, materials, and a high level of instruction she wasn’t getting at school or home. After her first few classes, the degree of detail, shading, and realism in her drawings was impressive.” - Andi J.

“My six year old’s teacher had the most innovative lesson plans that went along perfectly with the theme and taught him about real artists, while exploring his creativity! … 10 out of 10!” - Sarah M.

“My children Aylin (8 years old) and Angel (5 years old) have attended Sonoma Art School’s art classes and they love it. When I go to pick her up, my daughter tells me that she doesn't want to go home yet! They have told me that the instructors they have had (Taryn, Kelly) are very flexible and kind. I love seeing every project they bring home!” – Manuela L.

“Our 6-year old is learning blending and shading techniques and "artist's tricks" for drawing portraits from her instructors Kelly and Taryn and comes home brimming with artwork and ideas. The day she has Sonoma Art School is her favorite day of the week!”– Stephanie T.

“Loved: The girls (ages 3 and 5) found the instructors exceptionally warm and friendly and felt comfortable immediately there. They loved the variety of activities and the beautiful nursery environment , full of great outdoor activities.” - Katherine V
